Celebrate, 2004
Once again this piece works with texts, an essential tool of Patricia Bentancur’s work. As on other occasions, she uses the texts to produce works of a political nature, in which her intent, based on ambiguous phrases or phrases with many meanings, is to make the reading of the text more complex and endow it with new folds of meanings.
This piece was created on 31 October 2004, when a left-wing government was elected for the first time in Uruguay’s history. The first words of the leader of the left, Tabaré Vázquez, minutes after the voting-booth polls indicated that he would be the next Uruguayan president, were “rejoice, Uruguayans, rejoice!” (*)
One of the typical items which has been used, and continues to be used, by generations of Uruguayan schoolchildren, is the loose-leaf paper known as the Tabaré sheet, with a multiple and centenarian significance, since the character Tabaré was created by Juan Zorilla de San Martín, the illustrious author of a book which is a Uruguayan classic.
On these Tabaré-brand sheets, the artist has hand-written the word festejar, filling the space completely. She has filled fifty sheets in this manner, with some differences between them.
